Spice up your wardrobe with apparel suited for a champion.

Repping my favorite number with my favorite cobalt polish.

The latest sportswear inspired trend will have you feeling like a champion without breaking a sweat. Alexander Wang was the first designer to draw inspiration from athletic clothing, adding sporty elements to his signature basic tees and sweatshirts in his Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 collection.  The trend has since escalated, with designers like Philip Lim, Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney all incorporating sporty elements in their collections.

Vogue’s Esther Adams has declared an “athletic mood is taking over.” Indeed, it has. Retailers ranging from national department stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales, to fast fashion chains like Zara and H&M, to small scale boutiques like South Moon Under have all caught the sporty fever.

City Style asked Gloria Baume, fashion director at Teen Vogue to shed light on this latest trend. She told us that “fashion this spring is built for speed! Techy futuristic sporty fabrics in bright colors will flood the school hallways and beyond.”

Being prone to purchase more traditional, practical clothing, I opted for Under Armour-esque high-waisted leggings from Zara in a traditional black and a dark grey, rather than in a bright shade of red or blue like Baume suggested. However, she shared with us how to reach a happy medium that incorporates bright, sporty pieces with classic staples. Baume advised: “layer one bright piece under your shrunken blazer or sweatshirt to glam up your look.”

Take a look at City Style’s favorite sporty pieces from Zara that are perfect for high school fashionistas:
