Take a Bow

In NYC Style on December 9, 2013 at 4:23 pm

From The Duchess of Cambridge, to the Runway to the street, the 60’s sweetheart staple makes a stylish comeback

20131209-112001.jpgWho says ribbons only belong on Christmas trees and wrapped gifts? One glance at Vogue‘s Instagram page will inform you that those ribbons belong in your hair. This holiday season, embellish your pony tail with what the renowned mag calls “the seasons most versatile hair accent.”

Ribbons have been seen everywhere, on the hottest street style stars to Paris runways. Nina Ricci used bows to decorate simple, low ponytails, which created a very pretty and delicate look. However, in an interview with Vogue, the hairdresser backstage shared that he intended to create a “deconstructed and slightly naughty” look.

The ribbon is extremely versatile and clearly can be used in multiple ways. As a UES-er, I’ve been wearing ribbons for as long as I can remember. Since I’m confined to my school uniform, ribbons and headbands are how I express my individuality. I have curated a collection of bows and ribbons complete with Chanel, Bergdorf, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton. Simply put, bows are Blair Waldorf.

To start your own collection, head to your local craft store. The beauty of the bow is that they provide the opportunity to express your creativity and individuality, so buy whatever roll your heart desires! Find inspiration in some of these pictures from

With ribbons in your hair, you’re sure to have people bow-ing down to you.

The Leather Games

UES Blogger, Adrien, dishes on Fashion’s Favorite Fabric

My love for edgy leather accents has reached an ultimate high. Leather has been spotted everywhere this season from David Neville and Marcus Wainwright’s Rag & Bone runway to the coveted racks of  fast fashion chain, Zara. I cannot get enough of this lust worthy trend. The Spring 14 collections have solidified the omnipresent notion that leather is here to stay.

The secret to rocking this cool material? Minimalism.  Going overboard will have you and your leather jacket will be sent straight back to the 80’s.The best way to keep leather minimal is choosing key pieces that accentuate leather. On the UES, we love leather panel leggings, blouses with leather cap sleeves and small accessories like leather gloves and this Zara leather baseball cap pictured below.

Leather is the easiest way to achieve an effortlessly luxe look. Teen Vogue called leather leggings ” a major wardrobe mainstay because they’re just as wearable as a pair of jeans, but with a decidedly more luxe appeal.”

Take a look at our favorite hallway approved pieces from high school hot spots, BP Nordstrom and Zara.

{ZARA-Clockwise from left: Faux Leather Biker Jacket – $99.00// Combined Faux Leather Leggings -$49.90 //Knitted Faux Leather Hat – $19.90}

{BP-Clockwise from left: Topshop ‘Acute’ Monk Strap Bootie – $140.00 (similar to those pictured)// Brand and Label Collection Perforated Faux Fur Vest – $58.00 // Collection B Faux Leather and Canvas Backpacknow $32.16// Articles of Society ‘Mya’ Coated Skinny Jeans – $78.00}

Whether you’re rocking your leather on the streets of NYC or the school hallways, may the odds be leather in your favor.

UES Gossip: Stuck in Colder Weather

On those summer days when the temperature more closely resembles late March than early August, my go-to outfit is a light weight pair of pants paired with a neutral blouse. This pair from Urban Outfitters was perfect for my day downtown. The blouse was a gem I found at Joe Fresh and has become a cool day essential. The bag is an old Jessica Kagan Cushman and my hair tie-which I am in love with and scared to use-is Chanel. I got it for my birthday and have only used it a few times, but on a day like today when I am out with friends, I wanted to go for something special. Lastly, my shoes were a birthday present and they are from Zara. I am so in love with them I’ve barely had a chance to take them off!

Style tip: When wearing worn pants, style the rest of your outfit in a feminine palette. That way, your look won’t be mistaken for grunge.

In Her Shoes: Day In The Life of a Seventeen Intern

In DC Fashion, In Her Shoes, NYC Style, UES Gossip on August 7, 2013 at 12:30 pm

CityStyle chats with Devin Alessio, Johns Hopkins student and intern extraordinaire, about her experience at the largest teen fashion magazine in the nation.

To any magazine editor hopeful out there, walking into the doors of the Hearst Tower everyday for work is a dream come true. For Johns Hopkins senior, New Jersey native, fashionista, and Hunger Games aficionado, Devin Alessio, this dream is her reality! City Style made its way up from the UES and DC to sit down with Devin and to chat about how she landed an internship at Seventeen, tips on becoming an intern, her daily duties, and her fall clothing must-haves!

Road To Seventeen!

Devin had an internship at the Baltimore based tween magazine, Girl’s Life. GL was an amazing opportunity for Devin, as it gave her hands-on experience at a publication and opened major doors for her. During her time at GL, she met a woman who also worked at Seventeen. This woman helped her land an internship the following summer at Seventeen . Devin loved being at Seventeen so much and refused to be forgotten by her editors. She kept up with them via email throughout the school year just to keep her foot in the door. When it came time to find an internship for this summer, naturally, Devin went to Seventeen. Her tip: never take no for an answer!

Tips on becoming an Intern

Devin said that it is important to be persistent in order to achieve your goals and encouraged us to become involved with things we are passionate about, whether it is writing for our school newspaper or working on the yearbook. In high school, Devin was lucky enough to find a job at her local newspaper. Devin was persistent and called the paper quite frequently, until there was a job available for her. You go girl! Devin stresses the importance of applying for jobs at places you can really see yourself working. For Devin, Seventeen was her first choice because she “really believed in the magazine.” She was so passionate about Seventeen’s Body Peace initiative and really wanted to be a part of it.

Due to the rising use of social media, Devin tells us it is helpful to know how to use HTML. Ladies and gents: get your books out, HTML is the texting language of the online world! And her tip on how to have a successful blog: integrating photos and videos into your posts to show your readers that you have a good eye when it comes to style.

Day In The Life of a Seventeen Intern

Devin arrives at the amazing Hearst Tower for work every morning at 10:30 am. Her day begins with collecting story ideas from other media websites that she thinks would appeal to the audience, and then sends those ideas to her editors. “I like to get to work early and stay late. I can’t leave unless the job is done” she tells us. Currently, a major project she is working on is the Real Girl’s Guide to Back to School Style. Devin scoured Instagram to find the best teen style, then reached out to 50 girls whose photographs would be featured on the website (CityStyle blogger, Jordan, will be featured in this!). So, if you are in need of back-to-school inspiration, check out to see the latest on how to look amazing for the first day!

Perks of her job include rubbing shoulders with celebs in the office, reading the magazine before it goes to print, and getting a sneak peak at all the amazing fashion. Devin says the best thing about working at Seventeen is her freedom to write about what she is interested in and being surrounded by amazing people. Most recently, editor-in-chief, Ann Shoket and publisher, Jayne Jamison, treated all of Seventeen’sinterns to Crumbs cupcakes and sat down with them for a Q & A session. Ann shared with the interns the importance of connecting with readers and how she chooses to catch cabs rather than take the subway specifically so she can spend those few extra minutes above ground tweeting, instagraming, and facebooking herSeventeen readers. Love her!

If preppy Blair isn’t your taste, then most likely the fun, sexy, and fashion forward Serena van der Woodsen is! Welcome to part 3 in this 4 day Gossip Girl series. Today, I am going to transform Serena’s iconic and expensive style to something that fits everyone’s budget. So ladies who were expecting a Chanel bag look elsewhere!

Striped linen blazer $39 Zara

This is a versatile piece, but be ware! If you wear it buttoned as shown you might be the next victim on Fashion Police. You do not want this Joan Ranger (salute!) coming after you!

Guess by Marciano Beaded skirt $198 as seen in NYLON Magazine

Worn under the blazer, you will be the talk of the town! Worn with a basic nude knit tee is the best way to go with this outfit since stripes and sequins is a lot!

Now that you are well in formed on how to replicate Blair Waldorf‘s day time look, this is when things get really fun! Her formal and evening wear have been iconic towards the show and for certain designers careers. That Marchesa wedding gown? We’ve got you covered from head to toe!

This iconic light blue beaded gown blew Gossip Girl viewers away on the season finale. We love it. You love it. Everyone loves it, now you can have it (kind of)!

Tasha ‘Serena’ Headwrap $88. Even the name is ironic! And what Blair outfit would be complete without a diamond (or close to diamond) hair ornament!

For those days when you aren’t going to a wedding and just going to a party, you could use a simple dress and heels look.

UES Gossip: Gossip Girl (Part 1: daytime)

In NYC Style, UES Gossip on July 16, 2013 at 10:42 pm

So finally the Upper East Sider is posting about this column’s namesake, Gossip Girl. When people first meet me they always ask two questions, so I’m just going to clear the air.

The first, Is your life like Gossip Girl?
Well, how am I going to say this? No. My life is a watered down version of GG, and the only thing that remotely connects my life to it that is not exaggerated is private school. Some exagurations are… the drama. Though there is a lot, nothing as drastic as Gossip Girl. Another one is, the clothes. Our mom’s have the brands of the clothing that Blair and Serena have on Gossip Girl. UES teens are into Rag & Bone, Zadig & Voltaire, and J Brand Jeans.

Second remark, You are exactly like Blair!
My response: Style-wise all the way but definitely not personality wise. But yes, we have very similar style, and she definitely amps it up to a whole new level. I’m not a green cape, yellow shoe gal, but I do like my preppy blazers, bows, and riding boots… Guilty.

How can you dress like Blair and not get all the wrong stares? Well that’s what I’m about to help you with, if Blair Waldorf is your go to fashion icon!

First, she is pictured in her daytime outfits.

blair waldorf

Faux Fur Cape

Elie Tahari exclusive for Neiman Marcus $97 I mean a cape with faux fur? How Blair!

Tory Burch Hutton Mixed print sweater $96 (will keep you warm under the adorable cape and screams Blair!) This is also a versatile piece that can be worn with everything.

J Brand jeans 811 skinny flocked jeans $94

belgian loafer

Tod’s Belgian Suede Loafer $191 (how much more Blair can you get?)

Quilted messenger bag with pocket $39 Zara

Hearts and Polka dot scarf $9.99 Zara . What Blair Waldorf look is complete without some bold accessories?

Maybe this helped some of you GG fanatics out there looking for some Blair inspiration, and stay tuned for tomorrow where you can get some evening outfit advice with Blair in mind. This is only part one…

UES Gossip: Bastille Day

In NYC Style, UES Gossip on July 15, 2013 at 10:04 pm

A day late, but who cares? With New York being almost as chic as Paris, July 14th (Bastille day) is kind of a big deal here. And the UES loves anything French. Just put Parisienne in front of a store name, and you will have instant customers! Some of my fav french spots on the Upper East

Maison Kayser
If you have not been here, then this is an absolute must! A french boulangerie AND restaurant. I recommend the croque monsieur and the escargots. And once you hit up the boulangerie part you might not leave for days. The baguette is A MUST! You are not aloud to leave with out one. It’s salty and gooey and so totally delish. If you are in Paris, then check out their locations on the rive gauche!
3rd avenue between 74th and 75th streets (west side of street)

Most likely you’ve been here, but use bastille day (or close to the day) as an excuse to indulge in a decadent macaron. My personal fav: fleur de sel
Madison between 71st and 72nd streets (west side of street)

French Sole
In the mood for some fantastically colored and adorable flats? French Sole is a UES staple that caters from 10 – 110. And it sells only flats (with a kitten heel here or there). Pink, sparkly, leopard, black, you name it, they have it! They are also super comfortable and range from $59 – $200.

UES Gossip: Out and Proud

UES Gossip: Out and Proud

I love being a New Yorker, and one of the most amazing days in the year (no, not the Comme des Garcons sample sale) is Gay Pride Day.

Being on the UES, you don’t see the absolute outrageous. You do see happy same-sex couples holding hands and that’s what I love about living in a city that truly supports and is a diverse community. Only on this day can you see a topless woman painted rainbow standing next to a guy decked to the nines as Marilyn (OR a guy dressed as the statue of liberty with a rainbow flag draped over his shoulder).

A trend among teens in my neighborhood is rainbow colored dip dyed hair, so maybe we are ahead of our time, which is coming at just the right time!

Gay Pride 2013 came at the perfect time. California just repealed DOMA, and this is a big moment in American history. With July 4th right around the corner, celebrating America’s independence, this year we can celebrate EVERYONE’s independence.

Isn’t it just fabulous being an American? I think so!
