What Would Blair Wear?

Naturally, the first thing that comes to every girls mind upon landing an interview is, “What am I going to wear?!” For my first real interview (excluding my Lifeguard interview, which was pretty chill), this question became a crisis. Do I wear a dress or skirt? Heels or flats? But most importantly, how can I let my personal style shine through? I was totally clueless when it came to how to dress professionally.

I decided to turn to Gossip Girl‘s Blair Waldorf for inspiration. As you all know, Blair is my icon and her wardrobe exudes a stylish sophistication. Alex, the manager at my local BP Nordstrom, was able to help me put together this adorable blazer-blouse combo that was fun and stylish, yet professional and totally Blair. I decided to sport the bold black and navy combo and borrowed my mom’s black Paige pants with leather down the side. I finished off the look with my favorite high heeled booties and a girly necklace to compliment the blouse.

Would Blair approve? I think yes.

Spotted: Gossip Girl Fashion, 1 Year Later

An ode to our favorite Upper East Siders, one year later.

City Style commemorates the 1 year anniversary of the Gossip Girl finale with our favorite style moments from the show that  will forever  leave its mark the fashion landscape.

I’ve been watching Gossip Girl since the night it first premiered when I was in 5th grade. The show has no doubt had an influence on both my love of fashion and my love of New York City. One year ago from yesterday, December 17th, the finale aired and I said goodbye to characters I had (literally) grown up watching.

Fashion was an essential part of the Gossip Girl phenomenon. Show creator Josh Schwartz said, “we wanted fashion to be a character on the show.” What was magical though was how costume designer, Eric Daman, used this notion to mold the characters’ identities. Each character’s sense of style reflected who they were. In an interview, Leighton Meester said, “I put on the clothes, and suddenly I’m [Blair].” Daman transformed Blair, Serena, Chuck, Jenny and Nate (no, not Lonely Boy) into fashion icons and established Gossip Girl’s as a fashion power.

It’s a Plaid, Plaid World

Gossip Girl’s Legacy Makes a Mark on Real-Life Fashion

GOSSIP GIRL

It’s been years since Blair, Serena and Jenny strutted the halls of Constance-Billard School for Girls sporting their signature plaid, but this fall the pattern traditionally reserved for private school preps extends its reach from the school hallways to the runways.

During the sixth and final season of the CW hit show, Gossip Girl, main character, Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester), designed her first collection for her mother’s clothing line. After multiple episodes of struggling to establish the perfect idea, Blair finally had an epiphany. The concept? “B by Waldorf Designs”; a.k.a. dress like Blair. The collection was inspired by her Manhattan private school uniform and featured structured blazers, tailored blouses and chic plaid skirts.

While the Gossip Girl-era may have ended, its influence on fashion has only just begun. It’s barely been a year since the episode aired, but Blair’s concept has already been translated into real-life fashion.  Plaid was spotted in multiple collections at fashion week including  Reem AcraKaren Walker, and Marc by Marc Jacobs (view the rest of the Elle slideshow here). Teen Vogue  dubbed plaid the “ultimate autumn essential.”

For those days when you aren’t going to a wedding and just going to a party, you could use a simple dress and heels look.
